Positive news for Athlone / Westmeath. As the only elected member who submitted a strong submission to Westmeath County Council's planning office in support of this planning file I now fully welcome the decision by An Bord Pleanala today to grant full planning for phase 1 of the European China Trading Hub in Athlone.
This is a positive next step on the ladder towards making this exciting project a reality. The project promoters now have the official planning mandate to go and secure investment for this initiative. It is envisaged that up to 1200 construction jobs and 1500 sustainable jobs will be created under this first phase. Two thirds of the sustainable jobs will go to Irish / EU nationals, while a larger proportion of the construction jobs will be Irish / EU.
Apart from this there will be massive opportunities for the service providers in Athlone / Midlands to tap into this project covering such areas as tourism, accommodation, retailing, professional advice etc etc. Well done to the project promoters and their wider team for their vision, energy & enthusiam in bringing this project thus far and I wish them well with the next step.
The following is the News at One from RTE which dealt with the announcement of the decision of An Bord Pleanala.
